Are you a musician who wants to:

  • Get unstuck

  • Stay motivated

  • Write better songs

  • Create a career in music

  • Stay artistically healthy

  • Solve a particular musical problem

  • Understand music theory (and its real-world applications)

  • Start a band

  • Improve your playing/musicianship

I coach people at various phases of musical development -- from lessons on the guitar fretboard or how to break-up with a toxic bandmate to practical and useful aspects of music theory or how to motivate yourself to finish all those half-written songs rattling around your head.

Let’s work together to determine the best pathway for consistent growth and development so you can improve as a musician and artist.

How to Find the Right Music Coach for You

Music is personal. So is coaching. That’s why finding the right music coach is important. Look for coaches who work with people with your specific needs or experience level. Then interview the coaches who make your short list to find one you have a good rapport with.

I work with self-starters or DIY’ers looking for that extra nudge to get at it. If you’re hungry for tips and tools to gain traction in your pursuits, I’m the coach for you. We‘ll work together to identify your hindrances and formulate working plans to move forward in your growth and development as an artist.

Working with me is right for you if you love music and want to get better at it and make it a bigger part of your life. You may want to keep music as a hobby and grow as a musician or to make music a profession in a realistic and effective way. I can help you think about the options, the pathways that are out there, and then strategize how to navigate those pathways.

If you want to grow and to grow while having fun -- with joy and excitement, not drudgery -- let’s work together!

I work with people in Northern Virginia, where I am based, or we can work together virtually, wherever you are.

How does musician coaching work?

Music coaching can help you creatively or career-wise. Our work together can help you:

  • Address creativity blocks, low motivation, and low confidence

  • Ease uncertainty about what to do next

  • See dead ends and roadblocks

  • Learn from someone who has also been through this

  • Integrate your identity as a musician into who you are and what you do

What does a musician coach do?

As your coach, I’m a sounding board for working through the knotty parts of your journey as a musician. Sometimes we are just fine out on our own as we make our way through the jungle of our musical lives. Other times, we need some guidance. Together, we chart a path to set you on track for achieving your goals in your way (not just doing it the way someone else says you should.)

Coaching helps you become a musician, which is more than just learning an instrument. It's also learning how to be musical, and how to incorporate musicalness into your life and experiences in a way that’s congruent with your current personality, and in a way that can grow as you develop as a person.

But becoming a musician may also mean honing your skills on your instrument. As part of my coaching, I offer instruction in guitar, music theory, composition, and songwriting. My main instrument is guitar, but I am a multi-instrumentalist who also plays drums, percussion, and keyboards and who sings. Whatever your instrument, I take what you know and help you grow it.

Another part of what I do is show you how to stay in touch with the joy of music in all its forms. Part of being a musician is being a performer and putting yourself out there for the world to see and hear. That isn’t easy for everyone, especially to do in a genuine way that matches your goals and personality. Another part of being a musician is honing your craft. I help you do both these things consistently and with joy.

A music career coach offers practical advice and support to help you be a successful full- or part-time musician or songwriter. I work with career coaching clients to explore different paths and  business models and to understand the ins and outs of starting and staying in a band or other creative collaboration.
